AN EXCITING DISCOVERY ABOUT BREWING Vol. 1
German Pils vs. Czech Pilsner
I love researching the histories of specific beer styles, when and why they came to be and what were the thoughts that drove their creations. Every now and again I find interesting tidbits that throw a twist in my previous understanding of the beer.
Now, picture me reading Horst Dornbusch’s book on Bavarian Helles like it’s a thriller novel. Then, BAM, plot twist! The German “Pils” isn’t just Germany copying Czech Pilsner. Nope. It’s a lighter, hoppier remix of Bavarian Helles originated in northern Germany. They even named it “Pilsener” (with an extra “e” because, well… they could i guess) or just “Pils.” Meanwhile, Czech Pilsners are still proudly serving malt depth and noble hop poetry like the classy original.

It’s like learning your favorite cousins aren’t related by blood. My beer brain will be accepting condolences!
Fermented sanity. Precisely deranged.
